How to configure an Iridium Satellite phone to work with GeoChat

1. Make sure your handset is configured to send and receive SMS messages:

  • Configuration varies over time. Contact your equipment provider for up to date information.
  • Configure your 'Service Centre' on your habdset to be 00881662900005 or +881662900005 (the latter seems to work more frequently)

2. Add your Iridium messaging number to GeoChat as email Address under 'Channels' in 'Settings'

  • Your email will be your Iridium number, like so: [Number]@msg.iridium.com for example 881612345678@msg.iridium.com
  • You will be sent a confirmation code when you click 'email me!'. Give it a few minutes to arrive to your satellite phone. Be patient, it has to go to space and back.
  • When you get your confirmation code enter it in the box.
  • Press Submit

3. Tune your message frequency

  • Having high traffic will rapidly deplete your satellite credit.
  • We recommend you turn it off and when needed you can send 'ON' from your phone to turn the channel off
  • You can also change message options in 'Messaging' under you 'Settings'

4. How to send an email message from your Iridium phone to GeoChat

  • Compose a new text message on your handset
  • Write the address geochat@instedd.org, add a blank space, and write the body of your message
    • Example “geochat@instedd.org Hello!”: will send Hello! to your default group
    • Example “geochat@instedd.org grpX Need someone to call”: will send Need someone to call to the group aliased grpX
  • Send your message to the recipient *2 (on some phones you may need to enter 00*2 or +*2 depending on dialing configuration)
